New study finds hypnotism is an effective smoking-cessation technique

Smokers trying to quit sometimes use nicotine patches to fight their tobacco dependence. But patches don’t work for everyone. New research suggests that patches might be made more effective if used in combination with hypnosis, just as they tend to work better when used in conjunction with professional counseling. A recently published study showed hypnotherapy to be as effective as standard behavioral counseling when combined with nicotine patches in helping smokers to quit and stay off cigarettes for one year.

“This study provides much-needed evidence that hypnosis is indeed a very helpful treatment,” says lead author Timothy Carmody.

During hypnotherapy, Carmody explained, patients are coaxed into a relaxed state and then provided with a series of skills for coping with withdrawal symptoms and the urge to smoke. Patients are given an audiotape of this training to reinforce these messages at home, and over time it is hoped they will gain increased confidence in their ability to stay off cigarettes for the long term.

Hypnotherapy is one of many alternative therapies gaining wider acceptance at some of the nation’s best hospitals and medical research institutes.

The study, conducted at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and the University of California-San Francisco, was published in the May issue of Nicotine & Tobacco Research. A total of 286 participants were randomly divided and received either hypnosis or standard behavioral counseling aimed at smoking cessation. During standard behavioral counseling, patient and counselor discussed the dangers of smoking and the benefits of quitting. Participants in both groups were seen for two 60-minute sessions and received three 20-minute follow-up calls to reinforce the messages discussed in either the hypnosis or behavioral counseling treatment sessions.

Hypnosis was particularly helpful for would-be quitters who reported a history of depression. That finding suggests that smokers who have struggled with depression—or perhaps with other psychiatric conditions, Carmody says—might someday receive hypnosis as part of the quitting process.

Brian Hitsman, assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, called the results encouraging and added that the hypnotic intervention evaluated in the study may have the potential to serve as another nonpharmacological treatment option in addition to standard counseling. But Hitsman emphasized that hypnosis may boost smoking cessation rates only when combined with nicotine patch therapy. “This study says nothing about the potential effect of the hypnosis intervention in the absence of a nicotine patch,” he said.

What lies ahead for the field of smoking cessation? An important focus will be to evaluate the extent to which the effectiveness of hypnosis or behavioral counseling can be improved if patients remain on them long term (more than 12 months), Hitsman explained. He takes the perspective that nicotine dependence should be treated more like a chronic medical condition, much like the approach taken in the management of diabetes. “For most people, smoking begins in adolescence and persists across the life span, with multiple periods of remission and relapse. Acute care is the current model, with treatments typically given up to 12 weeks. For many, successful cessation will require ongoing intervention.”

According to statistics released late last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 45 million people in the United States smoke. Despite antismoking ad campaigns blanketing the country, cigarette use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, accounting for 1 death in 5. Smoking claims 438,000 lives each year. Kentucky, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Mississippi top the list of states with the highest prevalence of current smokers, while Utah, California, and Idaho have the lowest percentages of smokers lighting up in the nation.

I: How does your program work and why is it so effective?

Last Saturday, I had an amazing opportunity to share something I haven’t shared in sometime.

“Vision”

I was asked to do a “break out session” (workshop) at the first Successful Thinkers Conference in the Central Valley, (Stockton) California. The topic I was assigned to was “Vision.” To be completely honest, I thought, well-wow, how did the planning committee come up with that?

“That’s ok,” I thought to myself. Because certainly “vision” is an important aspect of consciousness. In fact, as I’ve shared many times now, either on my blog posts or in my Monday Morning Power Start series and classes, our subconscious mind does not know the difference between what’s real and what we imagine and since our mind thinks in pictures, I thought, yes, I can do this.

In 2003 I facilitated trainings at a resort in Canada that was about using the power of our imagination through a sacred process of “Vision Boarding.”  These vision board creations were in the tradition of the Native American Medicine Wheel teachings that I had learned from my shaman council, including integrating the energies of the 4 directions, with “Self” in the center.

Each of the directions corresponds with an element; fire, water, earth, air, which in turn relates to a different area of our lives. The vision board then becomes a sacred altar, honoring each aspect of our lives with which we set goals and intentions to manifest into the physical.

The feedback I received from people all over the United States and Canada was astounding to me. Participants called or emailed me months and even just weeks later to share how many of the things on their vision boards were coming true. Some were attracting amazing relationships, others had doors opening to opportunities that they were previously unaware of, some were building huge organizations in their business and having more fun, more joy, than they ever imagined before.

Honestly, I’d forgotten about all that. Since the movie “the Secret” came out, vision boards are pretty well known now. When I first learned to make a vision board in a sacred way, it was not known. Any vision board will assist you in manifesting, but to create your vision in a sacred way will explode your ability to attract to you and manifest all that you can imagine for yourself. It is a miraculous experience.

The 45 minute presentation at Successful Thinkers was fun, it moved me and reminded me of the power of our Soul, our Spirit Self. It was the first time I had brought this teaching into my home town and really shared this part of myself in such a public way. It was so amazing and powerful and of course, in a 45 minute breakout, we can’t really get into the nitty gritty of it, but still, it was fun, it was a taste of what we are capable of. Since Saturday, I have received several messages from the participants, that they too felt something very special and would like to learn more and really dive into it with their heart and soul.

You will be amazed at how your subconscious mind will go to work to create your vision in the physical world. You do not need to know how, just know that if you can imagine it, you can create it.

I recently rediscovered this magical book: The Four Agreements. Although the entire book is absolutely magical, I find the first agreement ~ “Be Impeccable With Your Word” so inspiring because it is in complete alignment with being responsible for your own thoughts.

“The word is not just a sound or a written symbol. The word is a force; it is the power you have to express and communicate, to think, and thereby to create the events in your life.”

Remember that all emotion follows thought. So whatever you are thinking about is creating an emotion within you right now. Thoughts are things with a distinct frequency or vibration and when you verbalize a thought and add the force of your voice and breath or spirit, your word is a powerful force moving through the world and it is affecting everything.

Do your words create fear and disease or do your words create love and acceptance, heaven on earth?

Our word has a special importance when it comes to children. Children come into the world full of creativity and imagination. They are not born with judgment and pre-conceived notions. Their natural state is one of joy and acceptance and doing whatever feels good in the moment. But through the process of the words of parents or other care-takers, children begin to shut down their natural ability to be loving and kind. One unconscious word from a loved one is all it takes to instill disempowering beliefs in our children and begin the process of creating a prison in the mind, full of self-judgment and guilt.

Whenever we speak to children, we must be so careful to choose our words from our higher self or soul self and not put any of our own poisonous ideas into their beautiful and pure minds. We are in a new age of enlightenment and it is our responsibility to break the spell of judgment, lack and limitation for the new generations. Of course, this journey begins within ourselves.

We can absolutely choose what we think and say to ourselves and others.

Ask yourself: Are you choosing empowering thoughts or disempowering and fearful thoughts?

Are your words to others based on your own stress, or are you taking a breath and choosing loving words to express to others?

Your state of mind belongs solely to you. And yes, like everyone else, you have been subjected to the programming of the dream of the earth plane. But simply because you are reading this, you are a pioneer into a different level of consciousness, a level where you are awakening to a different perception of reality.

In the book: Man’s Search for Meaning, Victor Frankl describes the most hellish experience most could even imagine. Being tortured by Nazi’s in a German concentration camp. He was surgically sterilized with no anesthesia, the pain beyond what any of us could probably comprehend. People around him were giving up and dying due to the extreme and inhumane conditions. Dr. Frankl was able to keep his thoughts pure even while enduring the most unimaginable torture and feel sorry for his captors, those who were inflicting such misery on him.

It was his ability to find his humanity and the freedom of his mind, that he survived and refused to become a “victim.”

I can say with complete honestly that it is difficult for me to imagine how he was able to do this under such circumstances, but the point is that our minds are powerful beyond our understanding and to begin to accept responsibility for our word, our thought and ultimately our experience of everything in life, is the step to true joy on every level.

Do your best today to Be Impeccable With Your Word. Do not cast your spell of hell and negativity on any other being, (no gossip) including yourself and just notice if your consciousness shifts even the slightest bit.

“If we adopt the first agreement, and become impeccable with our word, any emotional poison will eventually be cleaned from our mind and from our communication in our personal relationships, including with our pet dog or cat.”

Be happy no matter what is going on around you or seemingly to you, accepting responsibility for every experience, and see the new paradigm through the eyes of your soul. Choose your words wisely, you are more powerful than you know.

Considered to be the father of quantum physics, I am sure Dr. Planck stunned the audience, full of the world’s scientists, when he made this statement in 1944 as he accepted the Nobel Prize for his work with energy.

Everything in our world is vibrating energy. Any appearance of matter or form is a complete and total illusion and that includes us. As we begin to contemplate that things and all the space in between consist of light particles or photons, each with a unique frequency or energy vibration, we can begin to open our minds to the limitless possibilities.

Our minds consist of conscious, subconscious and superconscious awareness, the software, if you will, of consciousness, which is the mind or force of who we are.

We can ask ourselves, what is consciousness really? Is it this body, or this brain?

It has been proven in many scientific studies that energy never really dies, it only transforms into something else.

But in all nature there is a growth process and a recession or death process. We are either growing and moving forward or we are receding and returning to Source or pure energy. Nature is always flowing, moving and changing. Nothing is ever really perfectly still. Vibration is always flowing, moving and changing and this includes us.

Most people in the world acknowledge and recognize that there may be a spiritual ~ divine being or presence that is the source of life or a force of energy that animates our ability to be in human form. Since everything is energy and energy never dies, but only transforms, I contend that this consciousness, this source is in everything and everybody, including you. The body is a conduit for our “consciousness or spirit” to manifest itself and move into the material world.

Our brains are the hardware that our consciousness utilizes to channel our divine self, or spirit in the physical world.

Experts agree we use less than 5% of our minds at a conscious, wide-awake, worldly level and that over 95% of our consciousness is below the surface in the “subconscious” level. Our subconsciousness is inherent within every cell in our body, keeping our bodies alive by performing millions of synchronistic events between the different systems, without any acknowledgement by our conscious mind.

For example, our hearts beat, we breathe, our pupils dilate, food is digesting, etc., and we don’t really think about it until we get sick or something. In the less than 5% conscious level, our reactive ego lives. This is the part of us who needs to be right and that is always judging and criticizing and wanting more, but is never really satisfied.

But there is also a level beyond the 5 physical senses, the 6^th sense, where we can have experiences that seem to defy the physical world. We’ve all had the experience of thinking of someone we haven’t seen in a while and bam, we run into them or they call. Or think of the stories of mothers that seem to know when their child is in danger when they’re separated. Even dogs have shown evidence of this sixth sense, by seeming to know when their masters are on their way home.

This sense goes much further than most people realize and is the direct connection to the field or force that is this “conscious and intelligent mind” which Max Planck was talking about. Today we call it the Universal Mind or even the Collective Unconscious. This idea that we are all connected has been discussed by many ancient cultures and even our own Native Americans, who refer to this collective consciousness at “the web.”

Why is this important for us to know and understand?

Because it is the essence of who we are. The bridge or gateway to this source, this interconnected web of all life, where all information exists, is our soul or divine self, the “superconscious” part of us, the consciousness that never dies, but merely utilizes a physical body to experience life on the physical earth plane. For the most part we are unconscious to this aspect of our selves, however, our soul self is always there, connected to All That Is, gently guiding us in our purpose as our physical selves on Earth.

We are definitely living in an unprecedented time in history. There’s definitely something happening and even those in ordinary Earth awareness are experiencing it. Some think it is the end of days as predicted by many calendars, some believe we have over populated the earth and depleted her resources. Some people just know they don’t feel good, or feel fearful with so many catastrophic world events occurring at one time. Some are not really sure why they can’t seem to manage the fast pace of a stressful life today.

Over the past 20 years, I have opened my mind to the “so-called” New Age, spiritual revolution that has been occurring, which isn’t really new at all because it has been foretold in many ancient texts for thousands of years.

Truth is, I didn’t really have a choice, because I was born into this world aware of some things that others were not. To name a few, I’ve experienced altered realities and awakenings to my divine self that have allowed me to have first-hand knowledge that we are much more than we appear be and that there truly is nothing to fear. I have been visited by energy beings or angels, some call them, and have been shown and told of events that on a conscious level I knew nothing about. I have felt the touch of a loving presence on my hair or shoulder and I’ve always know that we are not alone. And I have always seen energy around people and things and brilliant flashes of colorful light.

We have the ability, which is innate within us to be happy inside and connected to the flow of spiritual support that is available to us. But as long as we stay stuck in “unconsciousness”, reacting through the filter of our tiny ego mind, to all that is being thrown at us, which seems to come from every direction these days, we will continue to feel helpless in our emotional misery. This is not necessary and it is not why we are here.

Each of us can decide today to choose to be joyful regardless of outside circumstances, to rise above the mundane and reach energetic states of bliss and completeness.

It has now been proven scientifically that the energy of our thoughts literally creates and affects everything and everyone in our world regardless of distance.

And since we are all connected with each other and with all that exists, we really have a responsibility to transcend our ego mind chatter and walk through the subconscious and superconscious gateway to become our higher or soul~selves on the earth plane.

From the higher perspective of the soul, there is no such thing as failure or pain, only growth and learning. Every interaction with another being and with our world is an opportunity to recognize our inter-connectedness, our oneness and to love, not criticize or judge, just love.

After all, in this moment, we are all Earthlings, regardless of our heritage or physical differences, on the inside our blood is red, we love our children, we all desire to be happy and the appearance of our separateness isn’t real.

Take a moment, breathe and just observe the awesomeness of your breath. It is the evidence of your spirit and the energy of All moving in and out of your body. Allow your mind to quiet and let go of any thoughts, worries or previous conversations. Just breathe.

Make it your intention to connect with your soul and imagine that a beautiful light is above your head, flowing down into your body and filling your being with love and light.

As your consciousness is the bridge to your soul~self, your imagination is the key to unlock that bridge or the tool you use to cross over.

Just sit and breathe and be with this being of light and love that you are. Make a decision now to connect with and be this light in all that you do as often as possible. Imagine you can see, feel or experience the soul of others as you move through your day regardless of their outward behavior. You just may find that you feel better and happier more of the time and are able to allow issues and challenges to flow around you instead of causing a reaction within you. And congratulations because you are waking up. I admire your courage!
